MOTHER

She taught me the ways of life,
How to keep away from the outsiders’ knife,
When to laugh and when to cry,
Doing so I grew, by and by.

She was gentle and kind,
Her name was the first on my little tongue,
She taught me to remain in  my  right  state  of  mind
She   was always  there for me  and  will  be  yet, for very long.

I have inherited her crazy laugh as well as her hot temper,
But one thing I’ve not got from her is,
The strength she needs to be my mother…

A FAREWELL TO THE BEST TEACHER

Of all my school years of teachers after teachers,
Ma’am you are the nicest,
You stood by me in the worst of times,
And were in my heart during the best.

When mom told me we were leaving,
I pictured VI C with you,
I was looking forward to another year,
Hoping that you’d teach that class too.

I wait each day for you to walk in class,
Just to let me know you’re not absent,
You were the first thing I liked about this school.
Ma’am you have found a place in my heart,

Where, for me, you’ll always be present.

Whenever I think of you;
I’ll see the smile that won my heart,
The twinkling eyes that assured me that everything’s alright
And your soothing, happy voice ,that made my spirits lift, try as I might.

So ma’am, please, when you think of me,
I hope you see a poet, a story bookworm and your greatest fan,
I also  hope my poem touched your heart,
The way you touched mine…

FOOD

Food over the ages,
Has changed like growing cabbages,
 From uncooked meat,
To tasty treats

Compare what we eat now,
Then look back…
Things differ so much over the ages,
It’s always good to keep track!

A YOGI

A yogic mind, as still as water,
Eyes closed, yet, the concentration may falter,
This person clad in saffron,
Does not enjoy pleasures for he has none.

Not likely to get up, until his true master calls,
Not likely to give up, until his level of concentration falls.

This yogi,
Sitting under a tree,
Is of depression,
Completely free!!

MY BEST TEACHER

You would never find a teacher,
With more starry eyes,
Twinkling with past mischief
And naughty story-telling lies.

What I will miss most
 When this year is lost,
Is this marvelous person, with every possible good feature -
 My history teacher!

BIRTHDAY WISHES

To dad-
A virtuous person,
A perfect poem- writer,
There is no one smarter,
Than my dear father!

25th October, the most special occasion,
Without which, the world would be missing a very valuable person,
It should be considered a worldwide holiday,
So that we can sit at home and celebrate your birthday.

It is for these reasons we make it a big deal,
We love you so much; we need you to feel,
And this time since you are not with us,
We’ll make it a point [in your heart] to be with you!!

To Ravi Perappan-
I sat for hours at end,
trying to figure out,
what to write to defend the fact-
that i cared about your day.

I thought and thought,
but words dont just appear,
i strained my brain till it got hot,
but things still weren't clear.

So now you know,
if i come birthday wish-less-
exactly why it is so.

And if i do,
manage to rhyme words to wish you,
please dont get me wrong.....
coz even if next year's wishes are twice as long,
nothing could possibly,
say how much you meant to me.
           -2012

To daddy-
You may lecture,
You may scold,
May be sarcastic,
and harsh and cold.

Sometimes you’re mean about my hair,
Or about the way I sing,
But if I’m sad or sulking,
You can keep me laughing!

When you’re around,
We’re giggling all the time,
You can make us laugh at every sound,
Even if you’re just jogging.

You may make us do math,
And other things ‘useful’,
But you help us understand-
‘It doesn’t help being beautiful,
Science will help you stand.’

You light up our lives,
And make us smile .
We know that for us,
You’d go 10 extra miles.

                                           -2012

To mom-
You design the best dresses,
you cook the best food,
i'll just say you sing okay...
coz i dont wanna be rude.

Well.... Todays your birthday,
and Valantine's day too,
all day, you'll gat your way,
we hope you're not feeling blue.

Presents and letters,
will come your way,
(maybe bouquets of flowers as well)
from all those who love you and remember your birthday!

    to esha-
There was once this little girl,
with curly black hair, and pinkish cheeks,
she looked the part of an angel
who'd come down to visit, for maybe a week.

No one could truthfully say,
she was a vision of perfection,
maybe perfect, on the bad side,
maybe good, kinda, if i lied!

Laying everything aside,
she's my sister, 'THE ESHA'
a name that doesnt scare.
Maybe we could call her 'THE SISTER'
and feel a little fear.

It was a good day, though,
the day she was born,
so i might as unravel and wish her,
A very happy birthday!!
                    -2013

to mum, again-
Everyday, you walk in the door,
sometimes later than half past four
weighed down by bags, your black camera case,
A tired, but happy look on your face.

We miss your noise, your utter lack of clothes,
your crazy lyrics, not to forget those,
your begging for hug after kiss
- that time your away at office.

We love to hear the noise of the bell,
when we've had a day from hell,
we know in two seconds you'll give us a hug,
and everything is gone, with a kiss, a shrug.

We really love you, though we make you mad,
sometimes a little disappointed and sad,
but today, i guess, we'll leave that alone,
today is YOUR day, your very own.

STARS

Stars though hot,
Look unwelcomingly icy,
Stars, though distant
Look yet so close.
Stars look like fireflies
Exploring the depths of the empty blue skies…

LILIES

It is dawn, the sky –crimson red,
A lily lifts its pure white head,
Purity flows throughout the world,
Equally among the live and dead...

A RIDE TO FREEDOM

1947 a momentous year,
We got the right to freedom
& could walk with no fear.
Patriots we all are,
We Indians reach out for our goal,
Whether near or far
Free to follow any custom or religion,
We vouch for a country
With no caste system or division
We all have a unique personality,
Still we work together and strive for equality.
Our freedom fighters got us freedom,
And we must make use of this hard to earn outcome.
We are a respected community,
So we must learn to cherish our country’s beauty.
And we promise to serve our country
To the fullest of our ability!
 JAI HIND!!!

DIPSITE PRIDE

Our pride of being dipsites
Cannot be expressed,
By mere words or actions,
But by the way we are dressed.

While wearing our white uniforms,
We walk with our heads held high,
We walk with pride because we know,
That there is no need to be shy

Our motto is ‘Service before self’
But before we help ourselves,
It is others who we help.

Discipline is our 1st priority,
Our work symbolizes the true meaning of sincerity,
Not only studies do we excel in,
In arts and crafts we are destined to win.

We promise our teachers
That their efforts would not go waste,
And we would not do anything,
 To cause them disgrace.

VI-C

As I walk in the door,
Bits of paper litter the floor,
Our class is a combination of naughtiness and fun,
If we work together there isn’t a single class we can’t outrun

In our class there’s a band called MARS,
They’re good, but I wouldn’t call ‘em stars.
The students of 6-c are quite nice,
They’re all quite truthful and tell no lies.

Though I felt quite lonely my first few days,
Then the number of people wanting to be friends,
Hit me like a bunch of sunshine bright rays

Now I don’t know where I’d be,
6-c sure means a lot to me!!

A WRITERS BLOCK

Once I sat down to write a book,
My lil’ sis poked her head in to look,
As I explained, she laughed
I told her to keep quiet, so to hide her laugh, she coughed.

Soon, she left me to do my work,
But she stopped by occasionally to smirk,
I found that writing was quite arduous,
And the thought of it being published hilarious!

My mother as usual was supportive,
My father’s lessons, effective,
My sister was just interfering,
So, here’s what I ended up thinking:

With all this excitement going about…
When would I start writing?
